This year’s programme is an invitation to get closer: to the stories on screen, to personal archives, to the material of film itself, and to each other. Some things are simply better seen from up close. So, COME CLOSER.

We’ll open at ACUD Kino with a special screening of Lithuanian shorts, followed by a little opening night party and a chance to meet, have a drink and start the festival together.

Come closer to the 4 best new stories on screen

Our main programme brings together four of this year’s acclaimed and award-winning Lithuanian films, arriving in Berlin after making their mark on the international festival circuit: Andrius Blaževičius’ How to Divorce During the War (Skyrybos karo metu), Karolis Kaupinis’ Badautojų namelis, Dovilė Gasiūnaitė’s Danka and Aistė Žegulytė’s Dulkės, kaulai ir stebuklai. Now we invite you to come closer to four very different cinematic worlds – intimate and unexpected, serious and playful, rooted in particular places yet able to travel far beyond them.

Come closer to home
What makes a place home, and what remains in its private archives? Special programme by Meno Avilys Common Days. Lithuanian Home Movies, 1960–1970 will combine a talk with a screening of newly digitised unique 8mm family footage. Scenes of everyday life in Vilnius: children playing, friends and families gathering, trips to the countryside – reveal a sense of community and ways of creating a life of one’s own despite the constraints of the Soviet system.

Come closer to filmmaking!
After a very long brake a hands-on workshop is organised: 16 mm analogue filmmaking masterclass with Leon de Backer will bring us closer to the physical side of cinema: film stock, cameras, hands and chance. Open to a limited number of registered participants, it will bring a chance to move from watching film to making it.

Come closer to short cinema
For our opening night, we look back at just how far Lithuanian cinema has come. Five Reasons to Come Closer is a special selection of Lithuanian short films from the past decade that have gained recognition at major international film festivals – a chance to revisit a remarkable decade for Lithuanian short cinema.

Our FEMALE SHORTS selection also returns with another programme dedicated to women directors voices in cinema – a festival tradition and a long-time favourite with our audience.

Full programme coming soon. For now, come closer!
